Mama’s Touch Spa TreatmentsThe Mama’s Touch spa treatments by Mama Mio were designed with expectant mothers in mind. These maternity treatments consider the body and skincare needs of women during their nine months of pregnancy, as well as the level of comfort, luxury, and pampering that all women want—especially when their bodies are constantly changing. First and foremost is product safety. All of the products from Mama Mio are free from paraben, petrolatum, artificial fragrances and colors, phthalates, xenoestrogen, laurel sulfate, and sodium laureth. They are also clinically tested and allergy-safe. The signature fragrance of these products is a blend of ten natural essential oils based upon their aromatherapy benefits as well as their positive effects on during pregnancy. The use of this particular fragrance provides users with the physical benefits of moisturizing body oil, as well as the emotional benefits of the soothing and relaxing fragrance. Most importantly, these products effectively improve skin tone and elasticity, because they contain essential fatty acids such as Omega 3, 6, and 9. Since a woman’s body tends to be lacking in these fatty acids during pregnancy, their skin can become increasingly dry or itchy, and their hair may become weaker, more brittle, and prone to breakage. By infusing the skin with the extra Omegas that it needs, the Mama’s Touch products ensure proper moisturizing which will enable the skin to maintain a youthful appearance. One of the greatest skincare concerns of mothers-to-be is the skin around their bellies. As the abdomen stretches, so does the skin; and pregnancy can cause anything from stretch marks to discoloration. Mama Mio’s Yummy Tummy spa treatment aims to combat the side effects of a growing baby bump. This relaxing treatment allows for pregnant women to rest assured that the unpleasant skin appearances that typically result from pregnancy are minimized; and the Yummy Tummy also promotes the restoration of skin elasticity and youthful appearance after the baby is born. The Yummy Tummy involves a combination of aromatherapy and skin exfoliation. First, Gravid Pulse Point Ole is applied to the mother, which sets the tone for a relaxing spa experience. Then, to improve the tummy’s skin tone, their baby bump is gently exfoliated which also improves circulation. In order to further treat the skin, a concentrated serum and a mask is applied to the belly, moisturizing the skin while also soothing the skin from any stress that it has already undergone through the growth of the baby bump. In addition to the tummy treatment, customers also received a head and face massage that relaxes the muscles in the shoulder, neck, and jaw. During the Yummy Tummy treatment, a series of Mama Mio products are use. This include the Gravida candle, an eye compress containing aloe vera and green tea extract, a tummy-specific body butter made of shea butter and almond oil, the Superfix Wonder-Full Balm, a safflower and jojoba-based massage oil, Mama Mio’s special stretch mark oil with rosehips, and an all-over body cream made with shea butter and avocado oil. Together, these products maximize the effects of the Yummy Tummy while also creating a calming atmosphere. During pregnancy, women will undoubtedly gain a certain amount of weight. Whether a woman gains 15 or 50 pounds, their bodies are under a great deal of strain and their center of gravity completely shifts. As a result, there is a greater amount of pressure on the knees and feet, especially around the ball of the foot, the heel, and the arch. In addition, there is normally some water retention within the feet, leading to swelled ankles and even major discomfort. Keeping the feet elevated may provide some relief; but to provide pregnant women with even more comfort and ease the pain of swollen feet and ankles, we offer Mama Mio’s Lighten Up spa service—a 30 minute treatment focused only on the lower leg region. Lighten Up includes a foot soak in a mineral-rich foot bath, as well as a relaxing massage for the calves and feet. The massage, in particular, increases circulation within the lower leg and eases water retention. There is also a reduction in swelling, because of the salt content of the foot soak. Due to the extra weight that the feet have to carry and support every day, it is clear why foot massages are a favorite among expectant mothers. Along with the improved circulation and reduced water retention that Lighten Up promotes, it provides general muscle relief. With so many pressure points located in the feet, customers will find that a relaxing foot and lower leg massage will ease tension all throughout the body and make them feel less stressed overall. The foot bath that is used in the Lighten Up treatment is Mama Mio’s own Lighten Up Foot Soak, containing both sea and Epsom salts. It also has Mama Mio’s signature Gravida fragrance, with aromatherapy properties. The Mama Mio Super-rub Massage Oil, containing safflower, jojoba, and almond oils is also used, along with the Super-rich Body Cream. Massage is one of the best forms of therapy in terms of reducing stress, pain, depression, muscle tension, and anxiety. Receiving massage treatments can help women deal with some of the strain their bodies undergo during pregnancy, helping their experience to be as comfortable, enjoyable, and pain-free as possible. Contrary to what some may believe, massage therapy is not merely a self-indulgent form of luxury. Studies have shown that regular massage can regulate the levels of hormones within the body, which often spike due to stress or anxiety (American Pregnancy Association). Since a woman’s hormones ultimately affect her baby, massage therapy has been proven to be beneficial to the baby as well as the mother. Mama Mio’s Mellow Mama spa treatment is a special version of therapeutic prenatal massage. It is a seventy-five minute full-body treatment that involves prenatal-specific techniques of massage that serves to relax the muscles, reduce water retention throughout the body, and increase overall circulation. In addition, special attention is paid to those muscles that work hardest to support the growing baby bump, since these muscles are under particular strain. The use of Mama Mio’s classic line of relaxing prenatal products, including the Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Butter containing essential oils and shea butter, makes this a truly luxurious experience. Not only will moms-to-be feel pampered and cared for, but the Mellow Mama treatment also provides health benefits for the growing baby. Since pregnant women’s bodies are constantly changing, it is important that the massage therapist use different massage techniques and approaches when dealing with prenatal spa treatments. Mellow Mama therefore provides women will a luxury full-body massage that is relaxing, effective, but still safe for both the mother and the baby. Since there is a shortage of Omega fatty acids within the body during a pregnancy, pregnant women will usually notice that their skin becomes significantly drier than normal. Dry skin can be a major annoyance regardless of whether someone is pregnant or not, with side effects including flakiness, itching, and a more dull appearance. Some women may be tempted to attack their skin with a series of harsh exfoliants, like crushed walnut shells or coarse salt rubs; but this may simply damage sensitive or delicate skin, and lead to the skin becoming even drier. What is important to remember, is that the onset of dry skin during pregnancy is only temporary. Women should therefore take a gentle approach when combating dry skin so that their skin may return to its normal healthy state after the baby is born. The Mama Mio Smoothie spa treatment addresses the effects that pregnancy has on the skin’s moisture and elasticity. This is a full-body exfoliating treatment that uses the Mama Mio Supersmooth Body Buff containing almond oil, aloe vera, and vitamin E—all ingredients that improve skin’s tone, elasticity, moisture levels, and improves any discoloration. The Supersmooth Body Buff is a gentle yet effective exfoliant that safely sloughs away dead skin cells in order to reveal glowing skin; and the application of Mama Mio’s rich moisturizers prolongs the effects of the exfoliating treatment. The Smoothie lasts for an hour and fifteen minutes, and includes a massage along with the exfoliation. Together, they not only fight dryness but also improve the skin’s elasticity. The skin’s elasticity affects how well it bounces back after the baby is born—especially around the tummy—and after pregnancy pounds are shed. Healthy, properly moisturized skin reduces the appearance of dullness, sagging, and stretch marks that may result during and after pregnancy. One aspect of pregnancy that mothers-to-be must understand is that the woes and fluctuating emotions that they may have experienced when pregnant do not necessarily end once the baby is born. Granted, the birth of a child marks the beginning of a period during which mothers can start to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies and they are under less physical strain; but now, they have a baby who requires constant attention and who cries often in an attempt to communicate their needs. Studies show that the first six weeks after a baby is born can often be more emotionally and mentally draining that the actual nine months of pregnancy, which is why it is referred to as the 4th Trimester (Puryear, 2007, p. 113). In order to help new mothers cope with the first few months of motherhood, Mama Mio has developed a spa treatment called the 4th Trimester Healing Hour. This hour-long service includes a head to toe massage that serves to stabilize hormone levels, increase circulation, relieve water retention or swelling, and stimulate the mother’s ability to rest and relax. Along with the physical benefits of the Healing Hour massage, mothers also experience mental and emotional benefits. Postpartum depression, which can develop and last for about six weeks after birth, is common among new mothers. Stabilizing a new mother’s hormones with massage techniques and increasing the release of feel-good hormones therefore minimize the chances of developing postpartum depression—a condition that can be quite traumatic for both mother and baby. The combination of postpartum massage techniques and Mama Mio’s products that focus on reducing the appearance of stretch marks and tightening the abdominal skin offer new moms with a relaxing experience that relieves them from the new challenges and tiring everyday routines that motherhood entails.
